Ethics and accountability, investing in public and private assets, and working collaboratively with constituents and local elected bodies alike among main issues campaign will tackle.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA - December 16, 2019 - Ben Marcus, a small business owner, father, and resident of the Sunbeam area, proudly announces his candidacy for state representative for Florida House District 16.

“This campaign is about not just protecting, but investing in our public and private assets,” candidate Marcus said. “We live in a city with so much positivity and potential. It’s a shame many of our political leaders approach our issues from a deficit mindset.” As a nonprofit consultant and small business owner, he will be focused on leveraging the talent inherent to the district to address issues.

Ben will vigorously defend homerule principles on the trail, as well, fighting for communities to decide what is best for themselves. “Certain members of our legislature seem to revel in their ability to insert themselves into local conversations in an unhelpful way.” he said. “We deserve representatives who are actually interested in representing their constituents and working with local elected bodies, including putting in the hard work to do so.”

“Over the next 10 and a half months we will lead by example and bring people together from across lines of difference to develop collaborative solutions for this district,” Marcus indicated. “People should be involved in every step in the policy making process. If granted the opportunity by District 16 voters, I will work tirelessly to ensure my constituents are as integrated into the work being done in Tallahassee as possible.” Ben continued, “the job of a state legislator is more involved than just taking votes and introducing legislation. It takes lots of conversations, especially difficult ones, and a real interest in community building.”

Marcus will be a staunch advocate and example of ethical and respectful representation by holding the office and all public servants to the highest of standards, be it fundraising, constituent communication, policy formulation, and general decorum. As a two-time alum of AmeriCorps national service programs, he believes any oath to protect and defend our Constitution must be supported by a commitment to integrity, accountability, and transparency. “Elected officials are granted a sacred trust by their fellow citizens and attempts to undermine or hide from them is a stain on our system of government,” Ben said.

This district covers Southeast Jacksonville, including Mandarin and parts of San Marco and Southside. Residents and visitors alike know the district well for its beautiful outdoor spaces, impressive manufacturing, medical, and technical facilities, a diverse and talented pool of professionals and students alike, and countless nonprofit and community organizations spending all day every day supporting Duval residents.

Ben Marcus is a graduate of Santa Fe College and Jacksonville University. He lives in the Sunbeam area of Jacksonville with his wife and three children where they attend Ahavath Chesed. Ben believes in the power of community to solve its own issues and that legislators should work collaboratively with, not act to subvert, local elected bodies and residents. This campaign for State House District 16 is focused on proving there is another way to serve in public office, where ethics and collaboration greatly outweigh future ambitions and ideological purity.
